“The Vessel,” Silkscreen, 13” x 9,” 2013 here

Evocative of the collections of pathological specimens often displayed in medical museums and anatomical theaters of the nineteenth century, “The Vessel” (2013) presents a rendering of a spinal cord, captured in a mason jar. As if preserved in a chemical solution for the future instruction of curious medical students, the body in this image is reduced to its anatomically interesting features. Stripped of human context, this image is packaged for postmortem consumption, preserving the vestige of a living being in a state incompatible with life. The sense of mortality and grotesque medical display in “The Vessel” exposes the mood of morbidity and dread that the medical imaging apparatus conjures in the bodies subjected to its rays.
